Professor C. Ray Jeffery's book "CPTED" was published in 1971. Oscar Newman's "Defensible Space" in 1972. That's four decades of preventing crime. In an age before prevention was situational, crime was designed out, policing was intelligent or activities routine, CPTED led the way.

[2011] Situational crime prevention: Genesis and development of a practical science.

In many countries today, situational crime prevention is a strategic research sector in the battle against crime. Originating within the Home Office Research Unit in the UK during the mid 1970s, this ‘new technology’ has the purpose of developing crime prevention solutions by intervening in situations where crime commonly occurs. What has now come to be called “crime science” is based on an array of practical knowledge, evolves between research
laboratories and various professional sectors (police, town planning, etc.), uses evidence based research, and implements its theoretical discoveries in socio-technical innovations (prevention and risk reduction systems). This thesis retraces the development of situational crime prevention technology to have a closer look at the controversies from which it takes its shape. By describing this crime science-in-the-making, from state laboratories and
international policy transfers, from research studies and instrumentation, we reveal all the entities(researchers, government, theories, instruments, statistical classes, risk models, offenders, victims, technical standards, etc.) to which situational crime prevention has become tied, and untied. Thus, we demonstrate that concrete links weaved between researchers and their different allies go far beyond personal relationships, touching the very core of the
technology. As such, situational crime prevention is constituted as a collective, political entity.

[2011] We provide evidence that large-scale government intervention in the use of self-protective measures
lowers crime. Since 1999, all new-built homes in the Netherlands have to have burglary-proof windows
and doors. We find the regulatory change to have reduced burglary in new-built homes from
1.1 to 0.8% annually, a reduction of 26%. Even though the regulation of built-in security does not
target preventative measures at homes that are most at risk, the social benefits of the regulation are
likely to exceed the social costs.

[2009] Sustainable strategies for crime prevention rarely, if ever, find their way into the formal design and planning of urban places. This article illustrates how an alternative planning process – SafeGrowth – employs a more holistic style of neighbourhood development than occurs in traditional prevention theory. SafeGrowth is a shift towards a new style of prevention theory, one in which safe places emerge less from outside experts implementing strategies to or for neighbourhoods, and more from neighbours creatively planning with prevention experts, police and security. This article also provides a case study illustrating a practical example where SafeGrowth was applied in the planning of a troubled suburban neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada from 2000 to 2009. Crime reduction and increases in community involvement continue today suggesting this is an effective and sustainable method for developing, and redeveloping, urban places in the years to come.

[2009] The way places and buildings are planned, designed and looked after matters to all of us in countless ways. The built environment can be a source of everyday joy or everyday misery. It is an important influence on crime, health, education, inclusion, community cohesion and well-being. This strategy lays out how the Government will, over the next months and years, build on our record and do more to help create great places to live, work and bring up a family.

[2002] The aim of this report is to help police services and local partnerships approach crime prevention and problem-solving in a coherent, informed and structured way, to improve prospects for real achievement. It distils principles for effective, evidence-based practice. Drawing mainly on research in the United States and United Kingdom, it discusses the application of six key concepts: aims, problem-specification, tactics, mechanisms, context and replication. The examples used in the report relate specifically to situational crime prevention, for which there is the strongest research base, though the principles would be relevant also to other approaches to prevention. A case study of domestic burglary is presented.
